A little about Mike

My name is Mike Ballas and I am your Aquatic World South instructor.  By day, I am an Instructional Designer and have been facilitating and designing training programs for 30 years.  I have always been fascinated with what is under the surface of the water; whether it is the aquatic life or shipwrecks.  I wanted to know and see what was down there.  So, in 2006, I took the plunge and obtained my PADI Open Water certification.  I immediately knew that with my love for training I wanted to continue on and become a PADI Dive Instructor.  Besides, what a perfect fit – my career passion (training) and my love for diving.  Now by night (and weekends), I enjoy sharing my passion of diving with my student divers!

Qualifications

PADI MSDT and EFR Instructor

Certified to teach the following specialty courses:  Altitude, Boat, Deep, Drift, Enriched Air, Multi-Level, Night, PPB, Project Aware, and Underwater Photography

Background:  I served over 10 years in the US Navy as a Chief Machinist Mate on board nuclear fast attack submarines.  My last duty   station was in Saratoga Springs, NY teaching people how to run and maintain a nuclear power plant and steam propulsion systems.   This is when I fell in love with training.  When I got out of the service I took a job at The Raymond Corporation and relocated to   Binghamton, NY.  In July of 2006, I decided to try a lifelong interest of scuba diving.  I was immediately hooked.  Since, then I have continued my dive education and earned my instructor certification in Glens Falls, NY.

Mike's motivation - "a different world awaits you under the sea"

The PADI Enriched Air Diver course is PADIs most popular specialty scuba course. Why? Because scuba diving with enriched air nitrox gives you more no decompression time, especially on repetitive scuba dives. If staying down longer and getting back in the water sooner sounds appealing, then do not hesitate to become an enriched air diver. You can prepare for your next dive vacation by getting NITROX certified before your departure. This course has classroom only and does not require pool or open water diving. Talk to your PADI Instructor if you would like to do the optional dives. If you are a PADI (Junior) Open Water Diver who is at least 12 years old, you can enroll in the Enriched Air Diver Specialty course. Call or stop by the shop today to sign up! Once enrolled, your PADI Instructor will contact you with more information. Required Gear: Classroom Only – ENX Tables (EAD and O2) and RDP or eRDPml or your computer and its Owner’s Manual Optional Dive - Mask, snorkel, fins, booties, hood and gloves, wetsuit, BCD, SPG w/computer, regulator, ENX tank(s), weights, audible and visual signaling device.

They more easily observe aquatic life without disturbing their surroundings. You can achieve this, too. In the old days, dive profiles were calculated from the surface down to a maximum depth, then back to the surface. Now, dive computers continually analyze your depth giving you more bottom time for going shallower and allowing you to maximize your dive time. If you would like to understand more about dive computers and learn how you can use tools like the eRDPML to plan multilevel dives, then the PADI Multilevel Diver Specialty course is for you. Divers must have the following equipment: a dive computer, its owner's manual or an ERPDml and a timing device. If you are a PADI (Junior) Open Water Diver who is at least 12 years old, you can enroll in the Multilevel Diver course. Call or stop by the shop today to sign up! Once enrolled, your PADI Instructor will contact you with more information. Required Gear: Mask, snorkel, fins, booties, hood and gloves, wetsuit, BCD, SPG w/computer, regulator, tank(s), weights, audible and visual signaling device, slate and pencil, and an eRDPml. Divers are responsible for having all required gear and Dutch Springs Admission Passes, and air fills. Divers must bring their dive computer, its owner's manual or an ERPDml and a timing device. Your Instructor will contact you with the details of your class, date/time, and locations.
